Social Network

Last night, I watched The Social Network, which is a film based on the founding of Facebook. As this week’s COM125 lesson plan was about Social Media, many of Facebook’s early (and still present) characteristics refreshed what I had learnt during class.

As Mr Abel mentioned in class, Social Media is highly interactive and has a high reach, which is the main reason why its applications become extremely popular. New social media applications are being introduced to the mass every single day, and it is a highly competitive industry.

For the social media service providers, it is an intensive make or break situation. While social media has a lasting duration, social media services can easily fade into obscurity if they fail to maintain their competitive edge. Just look at Friendster, how many friends do you know of who are still subscribing to its service?

The film also reiterated the importance of being the industry leader, or being number 1; as runner ups can simply disappear overnight. The founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg was sued by the Winklevoss twins, who accused the former of stealing their idea of ‘Harvard Connection’, which eventually became the now-defunct ConnectU social networking service. I tried accessing that website, but it seems that the service is no longer in operation. A quick check on Wikipedia showed that its status is inactive, without providing any reasons.

Do you think that Facebook may end up like ConnectU; disappearing some day in the near future? I shudder at that thought because I have grown reliant on its service. What are your thoughts on this?

    Social networking sites are like fads, they come and they go once there is a better one available. Take a look at Myspace and Friendster, they were the coolest during their reign, I never expected them to die down that fast.

    But I have to say that Facebook has been around for pretty long, and many of us have grown to be so dependent on it. Storing of photos, the whole collection of friends, chancing upon old friends and stalking ex-girlfriends/boyfriends/enemies.

    In my opinion, for social networking sites to stay around, it has to be engaging, if it stops being interactive, people will forget about it. As for Facebook, I think it is going to be around a little longer considering the fact that it has become a part of our lives.

    I share the same sentiments as you!

    These days, when my browser is opened, Facebook and Twitter are permanently on my tabs. I can’t imagine days without Facebook, now that we have grown so reliant on it!

    Ah it is indeed quite alarming how all(I am not even going to attempt to use a word like ‘most’ here) of us are guilty of being attached to Facebook like life support – how quick we are to post a status, reply a comment, or upload a picture of the yummy dinner you are about to devour.

    Social trends are growing as we speak and considering the additional hype Facebook has received with the plethora of movies and books alike, it is probably here to stay…for now. But being slaves to technology, if the the day does come(oh Lord forbid!), I am pretty sure something else would’ve came up by then, as staying power continues to reach new heights.

  4. While ideas, an audience and some start-up capital is mostly what it takes a business to be set up, a constant competitive edge is what makes the business relevant and successful. Unlike most other social networking sites, Zuckerberg has crafted Facebook to be idiosyncratic in its usability and functionality. I say this because he has based the social networking concept on the psychology of humankind. In other words, he seeks out the innate curiosity and need-to-know of the common man and satisfies that carnal desire through his ingenious creation. Therefore, I would very much like to believe that Facebook is here to stay for a long time to come—unless of course, they charge for subscription. Cheers!
